The problems

Rising energy costs

The expansion of the electricity grid, rising CO₂ prices and geopolitical crises have caused electricity costs to rise.
Exposed to international competition, the German industry is fighting for survival.

Change in the energy industry

Due to the growing share of renewable energies in the electricity mix, there are ever greater fluctuations in electricity prices. Fixed electricity tariffs are no longer profitable and offers for variable electricity tariffs are now legally required.

Legal regulations

There is an overwhelming number of requirements, including but not limited to: building services, heat utilization & energy efficiency. Some of these regulations already have to be met today and will become more extensive in the coming years.

Lack of expertise

Particularly in small and medium-sized companies, there is often no dedicated specialist staff to deal with energy management issues. What energy data should be collected? What savings potential can be used, once identified?

The question is - how to deal with ...?

Variable
electricity prices?

In the past, the timing of energy consumption was hardly relevant.
Today, volatile electricity prices mean that the timing of intensive electricity use has a significant impact on costs.

Dynamic in-house generation?

Own energy sources such as solar or wind power supply electricity irregularly. Who decides the optimum time for self-consumption or grid feed-in?

In-house energy
storage systems?

Without storage, you cannot use surplus energy yourself. But is the storage worthwhile?
What are the optimal charging and discharging times for storage systems?

Industrial utility services?

Technologies such as compressors, cooling or heating constantly consume large amounts of energy.
How can these consumers be adapted to variable electricity prices?

Peak loads?

Short-term consumption peaks set the grid charges for the entire year.
How to ensure that these peaks are avoided?

Production-
scheduling?

Production processes must ideally never stop running. However, they are also energy-intensive.
How can production processes be operated at minimal costs?

The path to energy-flexible production processes

with adjusted flow

1. Development of an energy data infrastructure

We will implement a comprehensive infrastructure that integrates existing sensors and measuring devices and precisely records all relevant energy data. The collected data forms the basis for analyses, optimizations and long-term efficiency measures.

2. Monitoring of energy data

This is where the real-time visualization of energy flows takes place. Consumption patterns and peak loads are identified and provide important insights for targeted actions and further optimization.

3. Optimization of electricity consumption

Our intelligent software forecasts electricity consumption and your own energy generation. It uses cost-effective time windows to charge storage units and determines the optimum discharge times. This signficantly reduces your energy costs.

4. Optimization of industrial utilities

We increase the efficiency of your industrial utilities, including air conditioning, compressors and cooling systems. State-of-the-art control systems ensure that electricity-consumption periods are as cost-effective as possible, which significantly reduces your operating costs without affecting production processes.

5. Optimized production scheduling

With the help of our AI-algorithm we adapt your production processes without affecting production. Wherever possible we schedule energy-intensive product batches to low-cost periods. The order conditions from the ERP system apply and ensure delivery reliability, reduction of downtimes and energy costs. Other factors such as employee availability are also taken into account.

FAQs about energy-flexibility

Energy-flexibility describes a company’s ability to adapt its energy consumption dynamically and in line with market demand. It includes the intelligent control of energy flows, production processes and storage systems in order to reduce costs, avoid peak loads and efficiently integrate renewable energies.

The key features of energy-flexibility are:

  • Data-based control: use of real-time energy data and AI-supported forecasts to optimize energy consumption.
  • Load shifting: adapting energy-intensive processes to favorable electricity prices in order to reduce energy costs and grid charges.
  • Storage integration: use of energy storage systems for intermediate storage and use of renewable energies.
  • Optimization of industrial utilities: increasing efficiency in cross-sectional technologies such as compressed air, cooling or lighting.
  • Production adaptation: energy-optimized production planning that takes energy-intensive processes into account and plans them intelligently.

Energy-flexibility enables companies to sustainably reduce their energy costs, improve their environmental footprint and at the same time increase operational reliability and productivity.

There are many advantages from which your company can already benefit today:

  • Cost savings: by automatically adjusting energy consumption to favorable price-windows, you can reduce your energy costs in the short and long term.
  • Increased transparency and efficiency: real-time analyses and optimized processes can reduce the energy consumption of your cross-sectional technologies.
  • Future-proofing: A scalable energy data infrastructure creates the basis for long-term optimization.
  • Sustainability: the intelligent use of renewable energies helps to reduce your CO₂-emissions.
  • Employee awareness: Detailed energy data and clear reporting promote energy awareness and motivation among your employees.

These benefits not only make your business more efficient, but also emphasize cost-saving and define a modern factory.

The days of fixed-price electricity tariffs have passed!

The last few years have proven that there are numerous factors that influence energy prices. Among other things:

  • The coal phase-out
  • Geopolitical events
  • CO2 prices
  • The expansion of renewable energies (RE) and electricity grids
  • Other government interventions and levies

These factors, combined with the predicted increase in demand due to the electrification of energy-intensive processes, will cause energy prices to rise. (More on this in the FAQs)

Prices will also become more volatile due to the further expansion of RE and the daily, seasonal and weather dependencies of RE.

A plethora of laws and regulations are being enacted with the aim of ensuring a safe energy transition and creating incentives for companies to adapt to the availability of RE (e.g. §14a EnWG, §19 StromNEV).

The energy crisis of 2021-2022 has clearly shown how important it is to be prepared for unforeseeable developments. The factors mentioned above will continue to have a significant impact on the price of electricity in the coming years and make a forward-thinking energy strategy essential for all companies.
